Dog Pick-up
Lines that never work
I won best of breed at the dog show
Is that a treat in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?
I'll sniff your butt if you'll sniff mine.
My kennel or yours?
Pardon me, are you in heat?
It's okay, I've been neutered.

up gardens, barking at squirrels and peeing on anything in sight.

Max's Tribute
to Squirrel Appreciation Day
|

How do I love thee?
|
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways
I love thee trapped up in a tree.
Far from my reach, but still close to me.
I love thee standing out side my door.
Making life so grand on a day that's a bore.
I love thee flittering to and fro.
As I dream of ways to chase you so.
I love you as you scurry and chatter.
As I think of a new squirrel frying batter.
I love you as....
Who am I kidding... the chase is on little squirrel!
Woof! Woof!

Dear Friend,
Wag! Wag! Since we last saw each other (well, you
know what I mean) we've started a new year, gotten a new US
President and celebrated Squirrel Appreciation Day... whew,
what a busy start to the year.
Around my place, things have really been hopping. While
I've been going on my great adventures (I know, I've been a
little slow getting new ones posted) I've also been meeting lots
of new friends on twitter. If
you're not following me, you're missing out on fun stuff. Yesterday
I spent the day trying to get out of the kennel with my Beagle,
Doxie and Great Dane friends. I've even got a new squirrel
friend who drops by once in a while.
Things have also been really great with my Keep On Wag ging! store too. We've been selling
bunches of t-shirts and stickers and mugs and hoodies to dog
lovers all over the country. We're also gearing up to
attend a bunch of dog shows and fun events over the next few months.
Matter of fact I have to give a big Bark Out! to my newest
friends that we just met at the Charleston Kennel Club Dog
Show. Bark! Bark! You can see where we're going next
by checking out our event calendar. We'll
be adding even more events soon. If we're in your area, do
stop by and say 'Woof!'
Anyway, enough about me... how have you been? No, seriously, I'd
like to know how you're doing. If you've done something
that you think would be fun to share with my other friends let me
know. I am always looking for fun things to include in the
newsletter and on my blog... so shoot me an email and let me know
what's up with you.
Well, I hope you enjoy this month's 'stuff' and please make sure
you stop by and give my friends who contributed to this issue a
big Woof! Woof! (or Purrrrrrr if you're a cat)
Keep On Wagging! wherever
life takes you.

Djembe the Dog's
Training Tips
I've heard
lots of people got new dogs during the Holiday season so I
thought it would be a great time to share some tips on how to
"introduce" your new dog into the family.
Since you can't just say to your dog "Here is your new
brother/sister... Play nice," I'll give you some ideas on
how to introduce a new dog to your pack.
- Because
your current dog knows her home and will likely be
protective of it when a new dog enters, it's much better to
have new members meet the pack on mutual territory. Going
for a walk is a wonderful way for introductions.
- Initial
introductions are huge and should always be
supervised. There is always a possibility things could
get ugly, so it's important for the meeting to have humans
around. Read my earlier writing on meeting rituals.
- It's
always a good idea to crate the new dog so she can observe
the house from a safe place without getting too involved
right away. This will also allow your existing dog(s) a way to
get used to your new dog... but remember whenever the dogs
are together they need to be supervised.
- One
dog will always be the leader, and not always the older one.
We dogs look at things differently. Often humans assume just
because a dog is older it should be the leader, and they
interfere with the ranking process. This is the wrong thing
to do, because it messes with the "natural way" of
sorting things.

Ramblings
of a Fictional Puppy
¡Feliz Año
Nuevo!
That means 'Happy New Year'. Yes, thanks for noticing. I can
speak Spanish now. My creator, Mayra Calvani, has translated my
book into Spanish and it will be available soon. But that's not
all. The biggest news is that our publisher has said YES to a
whole series of books with-you guessed it-me, Crash, the cutest
puppy there is! I can roll over on my back and envision it...
Crash's Summer Holiday, Crash's Mountain Adventure, Crash's Day at
the Kennel, Crash Goes to the Doggy Spa, Crash and the Alien
Kittens, and on and on the list goes. The only one who doesn't
seem happy about this is Amigo, the 'real life' golden retriever
in our house, whom I have to fight constantly for Mayra's attention.
You should have seen him today while Mayra was playing the
violin. He was such a show off! He was howling like a wolf! I'm
telling you, the dog has a personality problem. Oh well, I guess
it isn't easy to live with a celebrity like me. I should be easier
on him from now on.
Visit Crash the Puppy at www.crashthepuppy.blogspot.com.
50% of author royalties will go to Almost Heaven Golden Retriever
Rescue and Sanctuary.
Congratulations to Lynn from Colorado! Lynn entered Crash's contest from our last
newsletter and won a copy of a prize pack that included a copy of
Mayra Calvani's great children's book "Crash!," a
bookmark, doggy stickers and a box of Belgian chocolates.

Make Your Dog Happy
- Two
words: Car ride
- Talk
to him (it doesn't matter what you say)
- Pop
open a fresh can of tennis balls -or- a fresh jar of peanut
butter!
- Leave
the house (but just for 30 seconds) and then come back in
- Two
more words: Belly rub

The Best Things in Life are Free? Believe It!
Corny? Maybe. True? Definitely.
Really people. Think about it. What things make you
smile, whether you want to or not? Pictures of your
kids? Photos of cute babies yawning? Videos of
adorable puppies and kittens playing with each other?
Beautiful music, accompanied by a breathtaking scene of a sunset,
the ocean, the mountains, the snow? A good joke? A
bad joke? See!? Free stuff!
Try something for me. Tomorrow morning, when you get up,
sit down at your computer, and start your day with something that
makes you smile. I hope you'll pick Jake & Tycho's
funnies first thing every morning like I do. But that's
okay if you don't. Just find something, first (not second)
thing in the morning, that makes you smile.
Ahhh yes. Life is good!
