As the Summer Heat continues it’s hold on most of the country it is very important that you take steps to protect your dogs as well as yourself. To help keep your dogs safe, we’ve got some great summer safety tips. And even a little cool deal for you too. :->
Summer Tips to Keep Your Dogs Safe this Summer!
1. Never leave a dog unattended in a vehicle, even on days that don’t seem too hot. Stanford University Medical Center conducted a study that showed the temperature inside a vehicle, even with the windows cracked, rose an average of 40 degrees in an hour, most of that within the first 30 minutes. If you see a dog (or other animal) left in a car, we recommend that you notify local authorities. Just do What Lassie Would Do.
2. Always have fresh water available for your pets during hot days. If enjoying outdoor activities, remember to take lot’s of extra water. Dog’s get thirsty too. Think about how thirsty you’d be if you had to wear a fur coat all summer long.
3. Never leave a dog outdoors in hot or humid conditions without making sure they’ll have adequate shade and water. Don’t forget to consider how the sun will move around your yard or porch – a few hours can change the shade scenario considerably.
4. Adjust your Exercise Times. Your dog still wants and needs exercise in the summer, but you can help by only exercising your dog during the coolest parts of the day. The best times are generally before 11:00AM and after 6:00PM.
5. Look for Signs of Heat Stress. This includes extreme panting, staggering, confusion, collapse, and unconsciousness. Douse your dog with cool (not freezing) water and seek veterinary attention immediately. Even if your dog seems fine, heat stroke can cause permanent organ damage. We’re not veterinarians, so we recommend that you check with your dog’s vet for more information on how to spot and react to heat stress.
6. Go Shopping at Keep On Wagging! with Your Dog. Okay, you won’t find this tip anywhere else, and maybe it’s a gratuitous plug, BUT if your dog is curled up at your feet while you’re shopping online, chances are PRETTY GOOD that you and your dog will be nice and cool.
And if you’re saving 20% you’ll be in a good mood, so you’ll also be more likely to pass out a few more treats… Win, Win!
