Max the Golden Retriever Spends the Night in the Kennel
Published by Max March 10th, 2008Yeah, another road trip… I do love going for a ride… wonder where we’re going today…. on the road again… goin’ places that I’ve never been… seeing things that I may never see again… I just can’t wait to get on the road again….
… just passed the park….. maybe today is lake day…. Nope… can’t smell it from here… we must be going to the … uh, oh… we’re on our way to the vet…. again, so soon?
… HEY PEOPLE! I’ve already been to the vet… I’m still a little sore from last time if you know what I mean… hey, how come you brought my favorite tennis ball and what’s left of my bird? Wait a minute… we must be going for an overnighter… cool… it’s Slumber Party Time!….
What’s up Dr. Jon? Good to see you too… both hands where I can see them …. whew, no glove today … kiss, kiss, lick, lick, kiss, kiss… yes, I AM a good doggie… Where’s Nikki? She gives such good baths… and for some reason she always smells like dog treats….
Okay, people… I’m outta here… going to the back with Nikki…. Sniff… sniff… hey is that Molly I smell? Wonder which room I’ll get tonight…. cool… the one on the end by the table with the treats… I guess being a blond does have its perks… Look’s like I’ve got a new neighbor…
What’s up, hombre? First time here? Good to meet you, Chiquillo… I’m Max. What’s with the shaking? pssst… I think you just dribbled a little bit there…. no, I don’t think anyone else saw it… just go to the other side… maybe they’ll think a cat thought your room was the litter box… Hey, didn’t I see you on a taco commercial? Just hang with me… I’ll show you the ropes….just remember… louder IS better… no, seriously… and when you go home? Sure, keep being loud… your people will love it … (nothing like messing with the “newbie”… snicker, snicker)
Rambo, is that you? Good to see you man… what? … still haven’t found ‘em yet? …. Good luck with that… keep licking… they’ve got to be down there somewhere… hey, did you bring any good tunes for tonight? No, me neither…. I still can’t figure out how to work the boy’s iPod…. Yep… I chewed on the end like you said… yep… licked that wheelie thing in the middle… nope, didn’t work… and to top it off, for some reason the boy got all made at me … not sure… you know how moody people can be…
Rambo… got any taco sauce? I feel like Mexican food tonight…. HA, HA, HA, HA… oh man… Chiquillo, I was just messing with you… oh, man… I think you just dribbled some more… no, seriously… Mexican food goes right through me anyway….
Hey, I know what would be fun… let’s see if we can wake up the cats next door… ready? Okay, everybody on three. Tap, Tap Tap, Tap Tap Tap …. BARK, BARK, BARK… BARK… BARK… BARK… Ha, Ha, Ha… I just love stirring them up… no purring in the cat room tonight…..
Guys, let’s stay up all night tonight… yeah, I know we tried last time, but I hadn’t had a nap before I got here… I hope there is something good on the menu tonight… I heard on the way in they are serving fresh squirrel meat… What? Oh, Dog Chow again… oh well….
Yawn…… I better get a little shut eye… it’s going to be a long night…. The band was jumpin and the joint began to swing…You should’ve heard those knocked out jailbirds sing… Let’s rock, everybody, lets rock. Everybody in the whole cell block was dancin to the jailhouse rock…

Max needs some MuttPuppets!!
You have a very cute dog, and great blog here.

HeyThereHowYouDoingIJustStumbledOnToYourBlog…. whew, wait, my owner says I have to slow down. Somthing about Border Collies being a little hyper. Neurotic I think he said. Whatever, let him be surrounded by things to herd and see how he feels.
First night in a boarding kennel, huh? Never been there myself - I always head back to the family home. Nothing like hanging with 5 or 6 other BC’s to get the juices really flowing.
Enjoy the hotel stay, Max!
Hi Max,
I am Djembe the dog. I am Rhodesian Ridgeback. I don’t think we go to the same park.
I’ve been blogging too.
I’ll set up a link with you.

Hah. Retrievers are great. Fun Guinness Book of World Records.
A Golden Retriever named Augie won a Guinness World Record title after she demonstrated her ability to hold five tennis balls in her mouth at a time. She never mastered tying a cherry stem with her tongue, however.

Hey Max, how can I convince my husband to get me a dog? I have two cats but I think they will get along with a new golden puppy. I am dedicated to training the puppy to get a long with the cats. The cats do not have claws so would not hurt the puppy. What advice would you have? Thank you for your time and consideration.

Angelia,
No dog is more tolerant than a Golden. I put up with a 7 year old boy everyday. A bunch of cats would be a treat compared to that.
Check out this video of a golden and some kittens. Proof positive for your husband.

Just saw an article about your dog blog on CNN.com.. very cute! Max is gorgeous. I have a golden lab, jack russel/rat terrier, schnauzer/terrier, and a maltese myself! and people think we’re silly when we speak on their behalf..
groan. I used to work in an animal hospital. It sometime seemed like every owner would come in and ‘talk’ for their pet. they would make up some sort of voice and begin each utterance with “and [insert pet's name] says”, then finish it with something like “…I hope this isn’t gonna hurt!” Now it’s been taken into the digital age.
What’s up Max?!? So nice to see some of us have our own blogs. My parents haven’t set a blog up for me yet, they say Dogs need not concern themselves with blogging! Well I disagree, I have plenty to blog about. Thanks for being a great inspiration for so many of our K-9 brethren!
Hey Max. I like your name. There’s a little person down the street with that name. I like it better for a dog, though. I’ve never been to a kennel but I have friends who have. Bummer for you. I always stay in my own yard and if my people go out of town one of their neighbor friends comes over to play with me and feed me. It’s a sweet deal, actually.
hey…. u should try out some squeky tennis balls… there the greatist i got this red one athats not squeky and it just sucks… o well at least i still have the squeky one!
Hey Max,
We (two Goldens, like you) are having fun finding all the toys that have been buried in the snow all winter. It is like Christmas every day we find a new one.
Hey Max & company - Mom saw your blog mentioned on CNN.com and now she’s going to help me set up a blog too. Doggy day care’s a blast but do you really sleep OVER? Without your Mommy and teddy and blankie and…and…??? On the other paw, a night without those bratty pups Willow and Toby and Mom telling me “no” every time I try to show the cats who’s boss might be fun too. See ya, Max!
Hi Max - I saw in the CNN article (well, my mom told me) that you live in Raleigh? Is that true? I live in Chapel Hill and am always looking for friends to play with. I especially love playing with other goldens. I, too, am obsessed with tennis balls and frisbees (we have a thing called the flying squirrel) and chasing bunnies (they are just too darn fast though). I think it’s great that you have a blog…I’ll have to talk to my mom about getting me one! She has started making me homemade treats lately, which I have to say is a very positive development
Hey Max,
Keep up the blog — it’s great. We are two chocolate labs living with two humans of which one is completely trained to answer our every whim. The other one is a tougher nut to crack as she has had kids and the puppy eyes don’t work as well. We spend our days doing what labs love to do - relax. This winter we have had a lot of snow (over 13.5 ft) so we have had fun in the back yard making dog angels, eating snow (only the white stuff) and watch our dad shovelling and moving the white stuff around. I lived in a kennel for three years before I retired and moved in with Reba. We travel all the time with our parents - they like to take us with them when they go.
Hi Max!
My name is Bitsy but my family sometimes calls me Boo (as in Bitsy-Boo). I’m a miniature black and tan daschund and I live in Florida. I have a friend who is a golden retriever named Max! I don’t think you are him though because he doesn’t have a computer. I am the happiest dog around. I wag my tail all of the time just for no particular reason - just happy. My favorite treats are a few morsels of cat food that I get when I pee and poop when my people want me to. Have you ever tried cat food - boy is it good! I try to get some every chance I get. If nobody is watching me closely outside I sneak over to the cats’ bowl and gobble it up. I was only at a kennel one time and didn’t like it a bit! I don’t care much for the vet either. Other than that I like EVERYTHING! Especially my basket full of stuffed squeaky toys. I don’t like the rubber ones…and they HAVE to squeak or I’m not interested. My favorite one is a hotdog! Everybody thinks that’s funny, I don’t know why! I am glad you have a blog. I have bookmarked it so I can find it again. Take care and keep it waggin’
Miss Bitsy Flower DeLight (they don’t call me that in public either! whew!)
Hello from the Denver Gang. We were all abused, neglected or abandoned at one time, until these nice people found us. They take such good care of us. Some of us even get to sleep on the bed, room allowing. Molly usually hogs the bed. We are all big dogs too. Have to say we agree about the tennis balls, they can be an adventure especially with five brothers and sisters to throw them too. Keep up the good work. We’ll shoot a reply later (we fight over who gets to type). Take care Max…
Hey Max, my name is Baxter, I’m a Cat. I get to Blog on my Female Human’s Blog, Mauigirl’s Meanderings once a week. If you click on that link you can find my Post from this week on Tuesday March 18.
Of course, I Blog about things from a Cat’s perspective. But we do have a Dog that lives in our Household and She is a Pit Bull Terrier and loves People. But unfortunately, she likes to chase Me. Oh well! Glad to have read about your Blog on CNN and my Female Human will be visiting often, I’m sure!

Hi ya Max,
Me and my sister Shiloh are 11 months old today. We’re going to Disney World for a week in May ’cause we’re to big, and oafish (funny dad) to stay with oursitter. My dad booked us into a nice hotel in Kissemee. We live with 6 other dogs and 3 cats, five of them are Golden retrievers like you. Homer is 10 years old; he’s red Golden who came to live with us in November. He’s was living at Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue and Santuary in West Virginia (http://www.almostheaven-golden-retriever-rescue.org/) but he wanted a forever home so he came to live with us. Jubal is 8 (a blonde) and JEB is 7 (golden). They are also Golden Retrievers like you; so are Shelby, 4 years old, and Jack, 3 years old. Abby is a 2 year old Yellow Lab. She also came here from A.H.G.R.R. Boru and Alex are Maine Coon cats, they’re always hanging in the house and like to box with us Landseer dogs; we find cats to be VERY interesting. Boru thinks he’s a Golden Retriever, he’s big enough, and he’s always hanging with them. Jenny is a sweet little tortie girl cat but she doesn’t like to play with me and Shiloh. I hope that you have/had a good time at the sleep over. My previous sleepover was at Doc’s hospital and wasn’t very pleasant but he did say that my bark would probably have a higher pitch. I gotta go now. Dad is yelling at me to get away from the computer and get my butt outside with the rest of the pack. Talk to you again.
Hey there Max!
I read the article about doggies blogging & I found it sooo kewl! I’m a Golden & I’m a blogger too. Let me introduce myself here a little bit for you.
My name is Amber-Mae & I’m Malaysia’s 1st dancing Golden Retriever! I know, how sad. If only we had more & then we can compete in competitions. Anyway, I do Canine Musical Freestyle demos all the time for http://www.puppy.com.my during their dog events. They have 3 to 4 events a year. I’m just over 2 years old & I’m already highly OB trained, now in Intermediate level (advanced), I do Agility, Flyball (mah favorite!), dancing ofcourse & I can do more than 30 cool tricks! The recent one is called ‘Take A Nap’. You can check mah video out in my bloggie…
I absolutely LOVE food, human food in particular, hard boiled eggs & meaty stuff. I eat alot & sleep alot but yet,. I play ball alot too! I can be very cunning at times & stubborn too becoz I like it! Aren’t we blondes always like this? BOL! (Barking Out Loud)
I have been hired to do a TV commercial for India once but that was done last year & until today, we have not heard from the producers. My hoomans (my owners) are waiting for a copy from them for such a long time already & I have been in the newspapers many times too. Yes, my pictures. Kekeke! Sorry if I sound like a show off but that’s me. I can’t change my attitude, BOL!
Okay what else? I think that’s about it I think. Oh & yes, I’m fixated with tennis balls just like you! I have to have them in mah mouth all the time & it MUST be in my mouth when I’m sleeping too. They’re like my security blanket. To know more about me, just head over to my bloggie. Watch all mah dancing, tricks & other videos too. Oh, & don’t forget to leave comments there too yah?
I love making new Golden friends online! Will visit you often. Oh btw, can we be friends?
Love licks,
Solid Gold Dancer
Oh by the way, have you heard about Dogs With Blogs? I have more than 100 over friends & I usually get more than 60 comments in each of my postings. That is becoz, I’m a DWB member. You can find & meet more than 700+ doggies in http://www.dogswithblogs.com.au. It’s a fun dog community place &* I usually encourage other to join too! Hopefully you will too…You will be very surprised how many doggies will visit your bloggie a day.
Love licks,
Solid Gold Dancer
saw u on cnn.com !
Although I now have a Cody, a Yellow Lab and Honey, a Pomeranian, my husband and I dearly miss our beautiful, smart Golden Retriever, Beau. I enjoyed reading your blog; but wish you’d post more often!
Hey Max you’re famous! I read about you on cnn.com, that’s awesome. I’m a fellow blogger too — I’m Rudy the Bedlington Terrier. Mom and I enjoy doing ‘my’ blog together. She says to tell you she used to live in Raleigh NC a long time ago, when she was a teen and had her first dog Joey, who my grandpa was named after. She went to Sanderson High when it was brand new! (so you can tell how OLD she is!) We’re in northern VA and don’t get down to Raleigh much.
See you around!
Love,
Rudy
Hey Max! How’s it going?? We love rides too! Come visit us at our website, where our owner shares recipes of dog food and doggie snacks that he cooks for us from scratch!! Yummy!!
Hi Max, It’s nice to meet you. Hope you didn’t get too homesick at the kennel staying over night. I had to do that once and I came home without my b****—and I’m not talking tennis balls. Ouch!
Cooper
We loved your site Max! Can we add your photo to our Golden photo blog?
I love reading about your life, Max! I have never been left at a kennel because everyone is afraid of me! I just show them my teeth, and puff up my 165 pounds, and strangers never come near me or my humans! Since I destroy anything I can get my teeth on if left alone, that doesn’t happen too ofter, either. Not since I ate a hole in the wall the size of my own head. My humans thought I couldn’t find anything to wreck in their weight room, I showed them! Good luck, remember, show your teeth! -Uriel
Hey Max!
My name’s Lillie, I also live in Raleigh, and my mom tells me I’m a Golden too, but I know I’m really a person. I speak English except when mom’s telling me not to chase cats or bark at the neighbor’s tiny, yappy dog - mom calls that “selective hearing”.
Anyway, I saw your blog and thought it was pretty cool that your people let you post all the time. My mom rarely lets me talk on hers, but I know she puts lots of pictures of me up there!
Gotta go chew on my bone for a while,
Lillie
Hi Max,
